Train testing begins on light rail extension to Gilbert Road

Vehicle testing to prepare for the opening of the Gilbert Road light rail extension will begin on Thursday, February 14. On the first day of testing, the train will travel slowly along the alignment, on Main Street from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road, as operational staff walk alongside it.

Testing includes items such as vehicle clearance at stations, the overhead electrification system, traffic signal coordination, and the switches that allow the trains to move from track to track. Trains will be seen sporadically as testing continues and will run more regularly as we approach the opening of the extension in May 2019.

Stay safe as you travel in the area:

  • Obey all traffic signals and message boards
  • Always use designated pedestrian crosswalks
  • Light rail trains are quiet. Look for flashing headlights and listen for warning bells and horns.
